GAUTENG - A 53-year-old scholar transport driver was shot and killed in Westbury, Johannesburg, moments after dropping off schoolchildren in his care.

Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko confirmed that officers received a report of a shooting at approximately 08:10 on Monday morning, 7 September 2026.

According to Sibeko, the driver had just completed his school run and was in the process of parking his vehicle at a flat in Westbury when two unknown men approached on foot and opened fire on him.

"The man sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was declared dead at the scene by paramedics," Captain Sibeko said.

Suspects flee in blue Volkswagen Polo

The two assailants allegedly made their escape in a blue Volkswagen Polo after the attack. Police have not yet established a motive for the killing.

Sophiatown police have registered a murder case and launched a manhunt for the suspects. No arrests had been made at the time of publication, and anyone with information that could assist investigators is urged to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

Westbury is no stranger to deadly shootings. In October 2025, two teenagers were killed in the area during a mass, sparking outrage online.
