A Mexican man living in Cape Town got far more than he bargained for on a routine trip to the mall on 22 August 2026. TikToker @tilotekilo, known online as "TILO Mexican Bru," posted a video showing what he discovered when he wandered towards a food court balcony and looked down.

Below him were hanging screens showing the Springboks versus the All Blacks in the food court. Every person in the area had their eyes fixed upward, completely absorbed in the match. Nobody was eating, chatting, or scrolling. They were watching rugby.

"Wait... literally EVERYONE is watching rugby?" and "Rugby is not a sport here... it's a national event."

Coming from Mexico, where rugby sits far outside mainstream culture, the sight of an entire shopping mall effectively stopping to watch a single game left him visibly stunned.

He wrote in his caption that he "somehow ended up in a whole Springboks viewing party," adding that he knew South Africans loved rugby but had not expected anything close to this level of dedication.

"Rugby is no national event... it's a family meeting 😉"

@gretchenmannoe explained:

"Yip, it's a whole event, malls, restaurants, pubs... even at home family and friends come over, and even workplaces will have boerie days, and you wear your t-shirt 😂🤣 but welcome."
