Chivayo, a Zimbabwean tenderpreneur widely known for his flamboyant lifestyle, died alongside his wife Lucy Muteke when their helicopter crashed near Marondera on Wednesday evening, 30 September 2026. "During the life that he lived, the late businessman Wicknell Chivayo lived big. He lived large, a person who was quite difficult to ignore. And even in death, it seems that will continue to be the norm," she said.
The burial plot reserved for Chivayo and Lucy is situated on a hilltop, with the family confirming the couple will be interred side by side. Notably, the space is large enough to accommodate 10 additional graves, suggesting that plans for a mausoleum could be in the works at some point in the future.
Buried near his mother
Chivayo will also rest close to his late mother, who was buried a few metres away at the same cemetery. The family connection to the site adds a deeply personal dimension to what is otherwise shaping up to be a very public farewell.
Hundreds of mourners from various walks of life are expected to attend the burial to pay their last respects. Chivayo was remembered by those who knew him as a philanthropist whose generosity touched the lives of many across Zimbabwe.
