- Many social media users are reacting to presenter Piers Morgan’s stance on tennis star Naomi Osaka, who recently withdrew from the French Open tournament, citing mental health concerns
- The British presenter has received criticism from many sports fans on social media around the globe as many people are fully supportive of the Japanese sports star, Osaka
- After attacking Meghan Markle in the same fashion some weeks ago, Morgan’s social media followers have argued that Osaka has the right to choose who she speaks to
Following the decision to withdraw from the French Open, Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka has received criticism from television presenter Piers Morgan. Morgan took to Twitter to share a column he penned for the Daily Mail and his views have been lamented by many social media users.
Morgan is the presenter who famously stormed off the set of Good Morning Britain after he was criticised by a co-host. He is now facing backlash after calling Osaka a “brat” for refusing to speak to the media in order to protect her mental health.
Morgan previously attacked Meghan Markle in a similar fashion after she revealed in an interview with Oprah Winfrey earlier this year that the pressures of royal life had led to suicidal thoughts.
Briefly News looks at the comments and reactions from many social media users who are supporting the Japanese star.
Global Twitter community reacts to Morgan
“If she doesn't want to do press then she doesn't do press. Quite simple. Watch some of the pressers after games. They are a joke. Utterly pathetic with idiotic questions designed to elicit an extreme response. It's a totally different dynamic from a team scenario.”
"The fella who chose to walk away from criticism saying, "That's it, I've had enough," is offering advice on petulance.”
"In what world can somebody be forced to speak to somebody else. If she doesn’t want to talk that’s her choice... apparently, it’s called freedom of choice?”
"What is it about successful women of colour that you hate so much?”
“Piers, she has the right to speak with whoever she wants to speak to. Yes, she has contractual obligations and yes she knows the repercussions. She has the capacity and is ready to pay every time she is fined. I think it is you 'cancelling' everyone you don't agree with these days.”
Osaka's stance and statement of withdrawal
“Attacking a certain type of successful woman seems to be the standard operating procedure for you. Surprise surprise!”
Meanwhile, Briefly News reported that Osaka withdrew from the French Open tournament just after promising to be unavailable for media interviews. Osaka announced her decision on social media pages and made the announcement that she would excuse herself from the tournament on Monday, 31 May.
The boycott comes on the back of a bitter fall-out from her decision to avoid all media activity at the Grand Slam event.
