7 Mzansi artistes who secured the bag without a major label this year

A handful of Mzansi musos have claimed success as independent artistes. Briefly.co.za compiled a list of 7 of those artists from Sho Madjozi, Shane Eagle and YoungstaCpt.

Artistes who preferred to go solo and self release their music in Mzansi is gaining massive momentum and respect.

In the more recent years, a few Mzansi musicians have climbed charts and dominated radio stations and the Internet without needing assistance whether financial or influence of a major record labels.

Briefly.co.za learnt of five musos whom had massive success in the music industry this year.

1. Sho Madjozi

Mzansi rapper, Sho Madjozi released a single titled John Cena which soon after became a global phenomenon. Sho featured on the global platform, Colors, on 15 August where she performed the song and it trended reaching two-million views which was a huge success for the music platform, Colors.

Madjozi was then praised for the song by fellow notable musicians including Missy Elliot, who retweeted her video on her Twitter page. Professional wrestler, John Cena also acknowleged and posted about Madjozi on his Instagram account. Sho then released ‘John Cena’ as an official single on 27 September.

The rapper was invited and appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show to talk about her song. While performing as a guest on the show, John Cena came out from backstage to surprise her and finally meet her. The video went viral, Sho called it her dream fulfilled as she always wanted to meet Cena.

2. YoungstaCpt

Mzasni rapper, YoungstaCpt also released his debut, self-published album titled, 3T, which was well received by fans and his colleagues in the industry.

3. Major League DJs

Major League DJs released an EP titled ‘Ase Trap Ke Pina Tsa Ko Kasi’, which did incredibly well and gave his hot songs such as ‘Shotta Moghel’ and ‘Overload’.

4. Dr Peppa

Dr Peppa self-released his popular song, ‘What It Is’ featuring Chang Cello, Riky Rick and Lucasraps.

5. Costa Titch

Costa Titch self-released his Nkalakatha joint which got a love of love from fans. AKA and Riky Rick even jumped on the song remix.

6. Shane Eagle

Shane Eagle self-released his well-received mixtape, Dark Moon Flower, which gained worldwide recognition. Eagle even toured Europe and got a billboard screening in the USA under Eagle Entertainment imprint, which is an independent record label and creative solutions agency co-founded by Shane Eagle himself.

7. Samthing Soweto

A special mention goes out to Samthing Soweto who dropped the song, Akulaleki off his debut album, which was also well received. The album is a self-release with no label behind it. The muso has broken records on Apple Music and ‘Isphithipithi’ earned his a grand milestone by becoming the first local artist to have a simultaneous number-one single and album on Apple Music, while the song was still on pre-order.
