The Cape Town Regional Court is set to hand down a critical judgment on Wednesday, 19 August 2026, regarding the detention of former Miss South Africa contestant Chidimma Adetshina, as authorities push to deport the Nigerian pageant queen.
Adetshina was arrested in June because she was allegedly living in the country illegally after crossing into South Africa through the Lebombo border post from Mozambique. Her entry was in direct violation of her status as a declared prohibited person, a designation that had been in place since October 2024 when Home Affairs cancelled her identity and travel documents.

Why Chidimma Adetshina's documents were cancelled
The document cancellation followed allegations that her mother fraudulently registered her birth using the identity of a South African woman. However, Adetshina's legal representatives have stressed that the Department of Home Affairs itself conceded she bore no personal responsibility for the fraudulent birth registration.

Her lawyers argue that her prohibited person status stems from a separate matter entirely.
A fraudulent bank statement was allegedly submitted as part of a visa application she made while residing in Nigeria. Crucially, her legal team contends that an immigration agency handled the visa application and submitted the document without her knowledge.

What the Department of Home Affairs argued
The Department of Home Affairs' lawyer disclosed at her previous court appearance that Adetshina had re-entered South Africa in 2025, despite being listed on a visa-restricted register. The department is now seeking to have her detained while it pursues formal deportation proceedings.
