A short video of Dr Masego Ezekiel "Easy" Matjila picking up his car from a mechanic has stirred a lively debate online, with social media users turning a routine errand into a conversation about wealth, success, and the rewards of a lifetime in broadcasting.
The clip, which circulated on 26 August 2026, was largely intended as a "proof of life" moment confirming that the beloved veteran was alive and in good health. What nobody anticipated was that his modest Toyota Corolla would become the centrepiece of a heated discussion in the comments.
Matjila is widely regarded as one of South Africa's most distinguished broadcasters, having built his career on preserving and promoting indigenous languages, particularly Setswana. He began his journey at Motsweding FM before rising to anchor prime-time Setswana news bulletins on SABC News, a role he held from 1993 to 2021.

His departure from the SABC was not entirely on his own terms. In an emotional interview on King David Studios with David Mashabela, he set the record straight: "I didn't retire. It was the SABC," explaining that the broadcaster had pushed him into early retirement before his planned final day of service.
His contributions to African languages in media were formally recognised when North-West University (NWU) in Mahikeng awarded him an honorary doctorate in humanities on 18 July 2024.
His video ignited a debate about whether he was truly rewarded for his time in broadcasting, with online users questioning why a veteran broadcaster was driving a modest Corolla instead of cruising in some of the latest cars on the market.
