Veteran broadcaster Kgomotso "KG" Moeketsi is not going down without a fight. The radio personality has launched a Backabuddy crowdfunding campaign to finance a High Court legal battle against the SABC after her SAfm contract was abruptly terminated last month.

Moeketsi's employment came to an end on 15 July 2026, following an internal investigation led by SAfm programme manager Ferdinand Mabalane. She argues the dismissal was both unfair and in breach of procedural terms, and she is now calling on supporters and well-wishers to help her hold the public broadcaster to account.

"I was unfairly dismissed without any due process. People get dismissed all the time, yet in a country like ours, you'd expect the organisation that helps people to uphold their rights would uphold their staff's rights. Help me take this public organisation to court," she wrote in her campaign message.

As of 11 August 2026, the campaign has raised R4,300, and with a R250,000 target, donors have sent words of encouragement as the star prepares for the fight.

What led to KG Moeketsi's dismissal?

According to Moeketsi's earlier account, the trouble began with a casual WhatsApp exchange on 30 May with a listener who had requested a song. Her reply, "Why don't you play it for yourself though?" was taken as offensive by the listener.

The very next day, a significant technical failure disrupted her broadcast for close to two hours. On 1 June, she sent a strongly worded email to the station raising concerns about the recurring technical issues. That email, she says, led directly to her suspension.

KG Moeketsi seeks accountability, not reinstatement

Moeketsi has been clear about what she wants from this legal battle: not her job back, but a proper accounting of how her contract was handled. She is calling for an independent assessment of whether the SABC honoured its obligations to her, and says other freelancers have since reached out to her about facing similar treatment.

"This is a fight I do not undertake lightly," she said.
