Former South African actress Thahira Syed has gone public with a heartfelt plea for financial help, revealing that she is simultaneously battling three serious illnesses: aggressive Stage 3 breast cancer, Stage 3 renal failure, and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The message, shared through a BackaBuddy fundraising campaign, has moved many who remember her from her years on television.
Syed described this period as among the most difficult of her life, saying it has tested her physically, emotionally, spiritually, and financially. As a freelance contractor, she has been unable to work while managing her conditions, and she noted that her renal prognosis has recently worsened in a significant way.
"I am currently not working (I am a freelance contractor), and my renal prognosis has recently deteriorated significantly. I am now having to urgently navigate the various moving parts of my treatment and care."
What Thahira Syed's donations will cover
Syed explained that any donations received will go towards medical aid contributions and related medical costs, transport, food, and basic living expenses. She also pointed out that the state will not cover renal treatment interventions, placing the full financial burden on her shoulders.

"I therefore humbly ask for your assistance at this time. I am deeply grateful in advance for any support you can offer," she wrote, adding that she holds firm to her belief in healing, miracles, and the strength of community.
Her campaign has set an ambitious target of R500 000, and contributions have already begun gaining traction, with over R72 000 raised so far.
Many South Africans will recognise Syed from her roles as Shaan Naidoo-Maistry on the beloved SABC1 soap opera Generations, a character she portrayed from 1998 to 2004. After stepping away from acting, she transitioned into a corporate career, largely out of the public eye, though she remains a fondly remembered figure for viewers who grew up watching the show.
