DStv is about to put a very different product in front of South African viewers. The satellite broadcaster has confirmed a sweeping package restructure launching on 17 September 2026, one of the most significant changes to its local subscription offering in years, arriving as the business operates under the new ownership of French media giant Canal+.

According to BusinessTech, the revamped lineup is designed around simplicity and greater content flexibility, with streaming packages priced as follows:

  • DStv Starter: R99
  • DStv Select: R299
  • DStv Sports: R399
  • DStv Movies & Series: R500
  • DStv Premium: R799

The long-awaited sports package is here

Perhaps the most talked-about element of the overhaul is the arrival of DStv Sports as a dedicated, standalone package. Carrying roughly 115 channels, it is expected to cover major competitions across football, rugby and cricket. The move is a direct response to customers who have long wanted access to premium live sport without being locked into a broader entertainment bundle. DStv has also recently renamed parts of its SuperSport offering, with SuperSport Variety 1 becoming SuperSport Football Plus and Variety 2 rebranded as SuperSport KickOff, among other channel changes.

On the entertainment side, movies and series have been carved out into their own dedicated tier, giving subscribers another targeted option rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

Canal+ takeover drives the changes

The timing of the restructure is no coincidence. Canal+ completed its acquisition of MultiChoice in 2025, and the new management has moved quickly to reshape the business. MultiChoice had been losing subscribers for some time, squeezed by growing competition from global streaming platforms and consumers becoming increasingly careful about where their entertainment budgets go.

One of the most dramatic decisions made under the new regime was the complete shutdown of Showmax in April 2026. The loss-making streaming platform, which had operated as a standalone service, was discontinued as part of a wider strategic reset following the Canal+ takeover.

With Canal+ now firmly in control of MultiChoice's direction, the September 2026 package overhaul looks set to be just the opening move in a longer transformation of how DStv prices, positions and delivers its content to South African households.
