Tyler Perry left Jennifer Hudson visibly surprised when he flatly declared he had no interest in ever tying the knot. The billionaire filmmaker made the admission during his appearance on the Jennifer Hudson Show, which aired on 14 September 2026, offering fans a rare and candid look at his personal beliefs around love and commitment.
Hudson brought up Perry's marriage-themed film catalogue, specifically the Why Did I Get Married? series, and asked whether the director himself had any desire to walk down the aisle. His answer was immediate and unambiguous: "Nope."
Why Tyler Perry is steering clear of marriage
Perry, best known for creating the beloved Madea franchise, explained that his hesitation has nothing to do with love itself but rather with what he has witnessed divorce do to people close to him.

"It's not the marriage that bothers me, it's the divorce."
The director went further, connecting financial ruin to the breakdown of marriages he had observed firsthand, saying he was content with being "free."
"Everybody that I know who did well and went broke, it was because of divorce. So, I'm good just being free."

Perry shares a son, Aman, with his former partner Gelila Bekele. The two welcomed the child in 2014, but their relationship was reported to have ended in December 2020.
In a lighter moment during the interview, Perry joked that the one thing that made him think about marriage is the opening of Aretha Franklin's classic track, I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You). He quoted its opening lines.
"You're a no-good heartbreaker. You're a liar, and you're a cheat. And I don't know why. I let you do these things to me."
The timing of Perry's candid remarks is particularly pointed, coming shortly after the premiere of the third instalment of the Why Did I Get Married? franchise, Why Did I Get Married Again, on Netflix in September 2026.
The film brings back much of its original ensemble, including Jill Scott, Tasha Smith, Michael Jai White, Lamman Rucker, Sharon Leal, and Richard T. Jones, with Perry himself also returning to the cast. New addition Taraji P. Henson joins the franchise for the latest chapter.
