The cause of death of American actress Hayden Panettiere has been officially confirmed. The Greenville County Coroner's Office in South Carolina ruled that the 36-year-old died from an accidental overd*se involving multiple drugs, with fentanyl among the substances identified in her system.
Panettiere was discovered unresponsive inside a Greenville, South Carolina apartment on 16 August 2026. Her on-and-off boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, and his brother, Zach Hickerson, were present at the time. Emergency services responded to a 911 call and spent more than 40 minutes attempting to resuscitate her using CPR and other advanced life-saving measures, but she was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene.
What was found in Panettiere's system
The coroner's office identified several substances. Alongside fentanyl, toxicology results showed the presence of 4-ANPP, a chemical byproduct linked to fentanyl production. Alprazolam (Xanax), an anti-anxiety medication, was also detected, as were methocarbamol, a muscle relaxant, and quetiapine, which is used to treat certain mental health conditions and sometimes prescribed as a sleep aid.

Officials confirmed there were no signs of physical trauma that could have caused or contributed to her death. A representative for her family, publicist Kasey Kitchen, acknowledged the investigation was still continuing and described the circumstances as complex. While the coroner's classification points to an accidental overd*se, authorities have not yet closed every aspect of their inquiry into what happened.
A career defined by talent and personal struggles
Panettiere built her profile from a young age, becoming a household name through her portrayal of cheerleader Claire Bennet in the NBC series Heroes. She later earned further recognition starring as Juliette Barnes in the country music drama Nashville.
Beyond the screen, Panettiere was candid about the difficulties she faced in her personal life. In her memoir, This Is Me, she wrote about battling alcohol addiction and postpartum depression following the birth of her daughter, Kaya, in 2014. Kaya's father is Ukrainian former professional boxer Wladimir Klitschko.
She also endured profound personal loss. Her younger brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, died in 2023 at the age of 28 from a heart condition, a tragedy that compounded the challenges she had spoken about publicly over the years. Her parents' marriage also broke down during that period.
