Metro FM presenter Faith Mangope is at the centre of a heated online conversation after her interview with Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Limpopo chairperson Mametlwe Sebei left some listeners unimpressed. The exchange, which aired on Wednesday, 7 October 2026, focused on a Constitutional Court judgment concerning asylum seekers in South Africa.

The interview centred on the court's 7 July 2026 ruling in the Scalabrini Centre of Cape Town case, which found that several provisions of the Refugees Act were unconstitutional. Sebei explained that the judgment does not change who qualifies as a refugee but rather prohibits the automatic exclusion of asylum applicants without first hearing their cases. He tied this to the international legal principle of non-refoulement, which prevents countries from returning individuals to nations where they face persecution or death.

Sebei's Mandela Argument

One of the more pointed moments in the interview came when Sebei invoked former President Nelson Mandela to illustrate that illegal border crossing is not a modern phenomenon. He noted that when Mandela left South Africa in 1960, he did so on a fake passport, and that many ANC members similarly entered neighbouring countries such as Lesotho, Botswana and Switzerland without documentation. His argument was that international law compelled those countries to hear their cases, just as the current judgment compels South Africa to do the same.

Faith pushed back, questioning whether today's migrants could be compared to Mandela and highlighting that South Africa no longer operates under an apartheid regime. She also raised concerns about the Department of Home Affairs' capacity to process asylum applications effectively, a point Sebei acknowledged, agreeing that the department's dysfunction is a genuine problem but arguing it cannot be solved by leaving people undocumented.

Mzansi Reacts to Faith's Handling of the Interview

After the clip circulated on social media, listeners were divided. Several took direct aim at Faith's performance as a current affairs presenter:

@KThefirstone wrote: "She is using English to spew rubbish and hate and calling it journalism. The EFF warned you about this lady.🤣"

@luphumlongcayisa said: "That, as a station, you see nothing untoward with the ignorance and ineptness on the subject matter displayed by your presenter is alarming."

@nkosijhb argued: "Journalists who fail at basic reasoning. The lecturer is making an example of Mandela & went further to speak of many more who went into exile. How are you a current affairs presenter yet ignorant of many atrocities happening around us to expect no refugees to come to SA?!"

Not everyone sided with Sebei, however. @iknowyoudumb2 pointed out a geographical flaw in his examples: "All the places he named are our neighbouring countries. Most of those people we saw in videos came from so far! Somalia, Ethiopia, and Nigeria are all so far."
