On 31 July, 2025, a Johannesburg woman, Surprise Mmbodi, shared her terrifying experience with her Bolt driver, who was one of three people who allegedly stole her possessions and almost kidnapped her.
The woman took to her TikTok account and shared that someone had requested the trip for her, which left her hesitant, given the e-hailing service's reputation
Surprise stated that her driver, whose face she showed in her TikTok video, allegedly stopped in a dark street and asked her where he could turn right. She asked the driver if he was not using the map on the app, something drivers would normally do to get their passengers to their destinations.
After posing the question, Surprise said that two unknown men jumped into the car, threatened her, and took her belongings, which included her phone. One of the men even held the frightened woman in an uncomfortable position.

"I gave them my phone. Even when I told them my passwords, I was stuttering. I was very scared. He asked me, 'Do you want me to shoot you?' Then I gave him the password.
"They wanted to leave with me, and then the other guy said, 'She's just a student. Let's leave her behind.' They threw me out, and the car ran over my leg, even my hand."
Before warning people to be cautious around the University of Johannesburg area, Surprise said to the online community:
"At this point, I don't know why people aren't cancelling Bolt. I will never ever use Bolt."
