On 31 July, 2025, a Johannesburg woman, Surprise Mmbodi, shared her terrifying experience with her Bolt driver, who was one of three people who allegedly stole her possessions and almost kidnapped her.

The woman took to her TikTok account and shared that someone had requested the trip for her, which left her hesitant, given the e-hailing service's reputation

Surprise stated that her driver, whose face she showed in her TikTok video, allegedly stopped in a dark street and asked her where he could turn right. She asked the driver if he was not using the map on the app, something drivers would normally do to get their passengers to their destinations.
