Taystee Wheat vs Wheat Semolina: SA Man Tests If R45 Box Is Worth 3 Times the Price

A South African content creator has sparked a grocery debate after filming a side-by-side comparison of Taystee Wheat and Wheat Semolina to find out whether the price gap between the two products is actually justified.

AsadullahParker posted the video on Facebook on 13 August 2026, explaining that another creator had flagged the price difference between the two products. Taystee Wheat costs roughly three times more per gram.

To make the comparison fair, AsadullahParker prepared both products using identical recipes: a quarter water, three-quarters milk, half a cup of each cereal, a pinch of salt and two tablespoons of sugar. He said that while cooking and pouring the two porridges, he could not spot any meaningful difference between them.

A texture gap did emerge once the porridges began to cool. The Wheat Semolina turned noticeably gloopier, while the Tasty Wheat held onto its grainier consistency for longer. The difference was subtle at first, but became clearer with time.

Because he is not a regular Taystee Wheat eater himself, he handed the blind taste test over to his brother-in-law, described as a daily Taystee Wheat consumer. The result was telling. His brother-in-law enjoyed both bowls, calling one of them dessert-worthy, but he assumed both were Taystee Wheat. When asked directly whether he would notice if someone swapped his usual Tasty Wheat for the cheaper alternative, he said yes, he definitely would. Watch the full taste test here:
