A Tshwane woman got the shock of her life when SASSA declared her ineligible for a social grant and handed her a R13,560 bill to repay.

The TikTok user, known as @carrots, posted a photo of a formal letter from the South African Social Security Agency on 22 July 2026. The letter, payable through FNB, gave her 30 days to settle the full amount. Her caption read:

"They say I am earning 6k. I don't qualify for SASSA yhoo, and I owe SASSA R13500 yhoo."

SASSA conducts regular reviews using ID numbers to cross-check applicants' income against payroll and banking records. When a recipient's earnings exceed the qualifying threshold, their grant can be cancelled, and repayment of previously received funds may be demanded.

If you received SRD payments after becoming ineligible, SASSA can classify you as a debtor and recover the money. You must repay the debt electronically using your ID number as reference. Until it is settled, you may be unable to access other SASSA social grants.

The post tapped into a raw nerve. Many commenters shared that they too had received cancellation notices or were sitting on significant SASSA debt, with one user disclosing they owe R65,000 and another R35,000.
