Nathan Thomas, an 18-year-old alumnus of Miami Dade College in Florida, was officially named the world’s youngest professor by Guinness World Records in July.
Miami Dade College announced the achievement through an Instagram post that quickly spread online. The teenager now teaches engineering at the same college where he previously studied. His course, called COP 2270, covers computing and programming for future engineers.
Some of the students sitting in his class are exactly his own age. Thomas already holds both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in electrical engineering. He earned both qualifications with honours before returning to the classroom as an instructor. He quietly began teaching back in August 2023, long before the record was confirmed.

A 306-year-old record finally broken
The record Thomas broke had stood untouched for more than three centuries. Scottish mathematician Colin Maclaurin previously held the title after becoming a professor at 19 back in 1717. Thomas also surpassed the female record holder, Alia Sabur, who became a professor in 2008. Sabur was 18 years and 362 days old when she achieved that title. That makes Thomas the youngest professor ever recorded in Guinness World Records history.

The Instagram post announcing the news has already collected dozens of comments. Proud students and staff members flooded the post with congratulations for their young professor. One follower called the achievement seriously impressive and praised him directly in the comments.
Despite the attention, Thomas seems unbothered by all the fuss around his age. He explained that once someone is in that setting, everyone is simply there to learn. According to him, age does not really factor into the experience at all. His humble outlook has become just as talked about as the record itself.
