New Smart Geyser Controllers Could Cut Electricity Bills by 30% in SA Households

Electric geysers are quietly draining South African wallets. Research shows they account for between 34% and 41% of the average Eskom Homepower 4 user's monthly electricity bill, with heating a standard 150-litre geyser costing anywhere from R801 to R961 per month on standard tariffs.

According to a report, many homeowners have turned to conventional geyser timers as a fix, but experts say these devices offer only marginal relief. The real opportunity lies in upgrading to a smart geyser controller, which can reduce water heating costs by 15% to 30%.

Timers vs smart controllers

The difference between a basic timer and a smart controller is significant. A mechanical timer simply cuts power at set intervals on a fixed clock schedule. A smart controller does considerably more: it tracks live water temperature, learns the household's usage patterns, adjusts heating schedules automatically, and can even integrate with solar panels to redirect excess energy towards water heating.

Smart controllers also handle power outages more gracefully. While a conventional timer loses its schedule whenever the power goes out, a smart controller resynchronises automatically and adapts to whatever power is available. Safety features are built in too, with sensors that shut the system down if a leak, element failure, or dry burn is detected, potentially saving homeowners from costly plumbing repairs.

There is also a health benefit. By preventing water from sitting in the temperature range of 20°C to 45°C for extended periods, smart controllers reduce the risk of Legionella bacteria growth in the geyser.

What it costs

One prominent local option is Plentify's HotBot, priced at a once-off R849 with a R149 monthly subscription. For a household spending around R1,000 a month on water heating, estimated monthly savings range from R120.15 to R288.42.

The device is best suited to homes running electric or thermosyphon solar geysers, particularly those on time-of-use electricity tariffs, where the controller can automatically shift heating to cheaper off-peak hours.

Smaller households with lower hot water demand should factor in a longer payback period before the upfront and subscription costs are fully recovered.
