A South African social media chef turned a major milestone into a baking moment. Grace the Cookist, posted a TikTok video on 7 September 2026 recreating the rich, fudgy Matilda chocolate cake from the beloved film — and the result left viewers genuinely impressed.
The video was a celebration of two things at once. Grace had just hit 900,000 followers on TikTok and received her first-ever nomination for Best Food Influencer at the SA Social Media Awards (SASMA's). To mark both wins, she decided to honour a cake request from fellow content creator @thatohatsi_official, dedicating the bake to her.

Grace the Cookist's Matilda cake recipe
Grace started with a deep chocolate frosting using Cadbury Bournville dark chocolate, powdered sugar, cocoa powder, butter, vanilla essence, salt and fresh cream, all melted together on low heat before being strained through a sieve and chilled. For the cake layers, she combined flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda and salt, then folded in eggs, cooking oil, buttermilk, vanilla and 300ml of coffee. She preheated her oven to 175°C and baked the two layers for 30 minutes.

Once assembled and frosted, Grace described the result as:
"The best thing I've ever baked."
