Clement Maosa, the beloved Skeem Saam actor, has pulled back the curtain on a chapter of his life that many fans may not know about - and it turns out his journey to the small screen ran through a law faculty first.
During a candid appearance on the Relebogile Mabotja Podcast, the actor, best known for playing Zamokuhle "Kwaito" Seakamela, shared that he was still sitting his final year exams at the University of Limpopo when he landed his breakout role.
"I auditioned for Skeem Saam when I was writing my final year exams at the University of Limpopo. As soon as I got the role of Kwaito, that's when I graduated," he said.
What fans may not realise is that the now-iconic series originally started as a 13-part drama. Once production wrapped, Maosa found himself without a steady income and without an agent to keep the doors open. That gap pushed him into a brief stint at a Sandton NGO, where he worked as a legal intern for three months.

The experience, however, left him flat. He was not seeing the inside of a courtroom, and his contributions amounted to little more than, as he put it, giving "two cent legal opinions." Restless and unfulfilled, he made a clean break.
"I decided that it was not my cup of coffee," he said bluntly.

Using Law to navigate the entertainment industry
Rather than let his degree gather dust, Maosa, who is also a musician, found a far more personal application for it - protecting himself in an industry known for leaving creatives shortchanged. He spoke with particular passion about the contract pitfalls that trap many entertainers.
"As entertainers, we constantly find ourselves in situations where we complain about getting ripped off or being exploited, without understanding certain clauses within the contract."
That hard-won awareness eventually led him to part ways with his agent entirely. Today, Maosa represents himself, applying his legal background directly to every professional agreement he enters. It is an unconventional path, but one that clearly suits a man who has always preferred to chart his own course.
