A video of a green anaconda launching itself at a passing bakkie stopped South Africans in their tracks this week. Snake education page Slangboere shared the footage on 16 September 2026, and it spread rapidly as viewers struggled to believe what they were seeing.

The clip shows a massive snake coiled next to a road. As a bakkie drives past, the anaconda lunges at the vehicle with striking speed. The snake's bite attempt was instant and powerful, catching the driver completely off guard.

Slangboere used the moment as an opportunity to educate viewers. The page explained that the green anaconda is the heaviest snake in the world by body mass, with extraordinarily powerful muscles. This is the same species made famous by the 1997 thriller film *Anaconda*, but as Slangboere made clear, this was no movie.

According to Slangboere, the snake was not attacking the vehicle out of aggression. From the anaconda's perspective, a large object passing by looks like a predator moving in to attack. The strike was purely self-defence. The page also noted that South African sloth snakes would behave in much the same way under similar circumstances, reminding followers that snakes react to perceived threats, not to the idea of a car.
