"A Brother": SA Broadcaster Searches for Stranger Who Helped Her When Stranded on the M2

Kgomotso Matsunyane, a seasoned South African broadcaster, is on a mission to find the stranger who came to her rescue on a busy Johannesburg highway on 27 September 2026.
Matsunyane found herself stranded on the M2 during her morning commute with a flat tyre and no immediate help at hand. She called her brother, who is listed as her emergency contact and goes by @neommats17 on Instagram, but he was 300 kilometres away. He offered one piece of advice: stand by the car holding the loose part of the jack and someone will stop.
She followed his lead, and within six minutes, a man she knows only as Oom Gert reversed his vehicle, pulled over and asked if she needed help.
Oom Gert quickly changes the tyre
Oom Gert changed her tyre in 15 minutes flat. He refused to accept any payment and allowed Matsunyane to take a single photograph before driving off. She made it to work just 20 minutes late.

Matsunyane shared the photo and the story on Instagram, appealing to her followers to help identify the man. She was not entirely certain of his name but addressed him warmly in her caption, writing in Afrikaans:
"Dankie Oom Gert, Jy's nie net a Boer nie, maar a Broer. Baie dankie, hoor?" ("Thank you Oom Gert, you are not just an Afrikaner, but a brother. Thank you very much, okay?")
