A former patient at Lydenburg Hospital in Mpumalanga has moved hundreds of people online after asking a local community member to share her experience of an extraordinary hospital worker.
Smangaliso Mnisi posted the message on 4 September 2026 on behalf of a woman who had recently been discharged from the facility. She had spent several weeks admitted there and wanted the community to know about one staff member who had made a lasting impression.
“I honestly feel like Lydenburg Hospital doesn’t recognise nor appreciate this man’s effort, the patient wrote.
“His hard work and dedication are on another level. The way he treats patients with so much love, care, calmness and kindness is just so heartwarming. He is not even picky if you are old, young, Black or White. He is so kind and humble.”

She described him as a gentleman who attends to both male and female patients without hesitation, adding that she could “write a whole book about him.”
Mashego: A familiar face for locals
Locals quickly identified the man in the photos as Obed Mashego, known on Facebook as Khungwane B Mashego, from the rural community of Boromachine in Matibidi.
For many in the comments, the praise came as no surprise. Childhood friends, former patients and neighbours all came forward to share their own encounters with Mashego, painting a picture of a man whose kindness is simply who he is.
