Who is Babita Deokaran?
Deokaran was a health official in Johannesburg. She was shot and killed outside her home in 2021. Deokaran was killed after she exposed suspicious payments amounting to over R850 million linked to the Tembisa hospital in Ekurhuleni.
On Saturday, 23 August 2025, ActionSA commemorated Deokaran and others. ActionSA said that these whistleblowers paid the ultimate price for exposing corruption. It said that Deokaran's death exposes the justice system's failure to protect the brave South Africans.
"Tragically, four years later, the masterminds behind her brutal assassination remain unknown and her family continues to wait for justice.
ActionSA continues to call on law enforcement to strengthen its efforts and ensure that those responsible are finally held to account. ActionSA said.
ActionSA stated that the deaths were entirely preventable and described the assassinations as a indictment of a system that, even years later, has yet to deliver justice to the victims’ families. The party further highlighted that corruption remains pervasive and continues to thrive, with little indication that the government is genuinely committed to combating it.
