DURBAN - KwaZulu-Natal Hawks officers have arrested a high-profile Durban businessman on charges of human trafficking and kidnapping, in what has been described as a breakthrough by the KZN Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI).
Accroding to IOL, the suspect is convicted drug dealer Timmy Marimuthu and the arrest is allegedly linked to an incident in which five women were found at a home in Starling Crescent, Durban North in 2022.
The arrest took place on Tuesday at the suspect's upmarket property in Umhlanga. Officers arrived at the residence armed with a J50 warrant of arrest. The businessman reportedly offered no resistance and was taken into custody, where he was held overnight.
Suspect linked to Madlanga Commission
The arrested individual is not unknown to official investigations. His name has been raised at both the Madlanga Commission and the Parliamentary Ad Hoc Committee, placing him at the centre of broader scrutiny into alleged misconduct and criminal networks.

According to eNCA, the suspect was also mentioned in WhatsApp messages retrieved from the mobile device of Major-General Firoz Khan, evidence that was presented during proceedings at the Madlanga Commission.
KZN hawks lead the breakthrough
The operation was coordinated by a team of Hawks officers in KwaZulu-Natal. The charges of human trafficking and kidnapping represent a serious escalation in the legal pressure facing the businessman, whose name had previously circulated in commission testimony but had not resulted in a formal arrest.

In related news, Mohamed Sayed and Timmy Marimuthu were featured during the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry through leaked WhatsApp messages linking him to suspended Deputy Crime Intelligence head Major General Feroz Khan. Evidence presented to the commission alleges improper coordination, including influence peddling, leveraging police resources against competitors, and connections to political figures like EFF leader Julius Malema.
Hawks nab 13 police officers
Briefly News also reported that police efforts to root out corruption and root out “bad apples” within their ranks have led to the arrest of 13 law enforcement officers in Gauteng over allegations of extortion, corruption and trespassing. The arrests were carried out in the early hours of Wednesday, 23 April 2026, by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation unit based in Johannesburg. The suspects are facing charges of corruption, extortion and trespassing.
