Durban Tycoon's Human Trafficking Case Postponed After First Court Appearance

DURBAN — A 65-year-old Durban businessman has made his first appearance in court on charges of human trafficking, kidnapping, sexual assault, and contraventions of both the Cybercrimes Act and the Films and Publications Act.

The man was arrested by the Hawks on Tueday, 11 August 2026.

Case postponed, accused cannot be named

According to eNCA, the accused cannot be named at this stage because he has yet to plead on the sexual assault charge.

Following his appearance, he was transferred to the Westville prison hospital after submitting a doctor's note, where he will remain until proceedings continue. His bail application is scheduled for 25 August 2026.

Case rooted in 2022 Durban North raid

Broader details surrounding the case have been circulating since the arrest. Authorities reportedly raided a multi-storey mansion in Durban North in March 2022, which was linked to the accused. Five women from Eldorado Park in Johannesburg, aged between 19 and 27, were allegedly rescued during the operation.

According to written statements seen by TimesLive and amaBhungane, the women were allegedly lured to Durban under the pretence of legitimate employment. Once there, they were reportedly coerced into performing in online sex chatrooms that were streamed to international audiences. The victims allegedly identified the accused as the person running the operation.

Despite authorities collecting statements, computers, cellphones and external hard drives during the 2022 raid, no arrests were made at the time.

Alleged links to crime intelligence and former Police minister

Reports suggest the accused, described as a former drug dealer, was allegedly recruited by crime intelligence to exert influence over then-Police Minister Bheki Cele. At the time of the initial investigation, Minister Cele did not deny knowing the suspect but, through his spokesperson, stated that the matter had no bearing on him either in a personal or professional capacity.
