"I actually hate him. He caused a lot of problems for me," Matlala said.
He noted that the relationship soured following his 2025 arrest.
Matlala says Mogotsi claimed to be from Senzo Mchunu’s office
Matlala told the Commission that Mogotsi first approached him requesting money and identified himself as someone connected to Senzo Mchunu's office. Matlala subsequently met then-Police Minister Bheki Cele, who reportedly advised him to hand over the funds. Following that meeting, Matlala said he transferred R150,000 and additionally paid for Mogotsi's flights.
Despite making these payments, Matlala said he had grown increasingly sceptical of Mogotsi's legitimacy. He chose to continue paying, he explained, specifically to avoid alerting Mogotsi to the fact that he had lost confidence in him.
Matlala was unsure whether Mogotsi was working with Mchunu
On the question of whether Mogotsi was acting independently or with Mchunu's knowledge, Matlala said he could not determine whether Mogotsi was invoking Mchunu's name to extract money or was genuinely acting on Mchunu's behalf.
