PRETORIA — National Coloured Congress president Fadiel Adams delivered blunt testimony at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on 21 August 2026, flatly accusing former Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) head Andrea Johnson of lying about the circumstances under which he submitted his affidavit.

Adams, who has been testifying before the commission since Wednesday, was questioned about the submission of his Section 27 affidavit to IDAC. He told Commissioner Sesi Baloyi that he handed the document directly to Chief Investigator Perumal in Cape Town, and that no conversation about the Section 27 application took place at that time.

Adams disputes Johnson's version of events

The commissioner then put Johnson's earlier testimony to Adams, noting that she had told the commission he delivered the affidavit to the Pretoria office at the reception desk. Adams rejected her version without hesitation.

"No, she's lying. I'm telling you categorically that she's lying," Adams said in response.

The exchange produced a sharp contradiction between two witnesses appearing before the commission, which is investigating political interference and corruption in South Africa's criminal justice system.

Commission hears conflicting accounts

The Madlanga Commission has been examining the conduct of IDAC and the individuals involved in its operations. Johnson previously appeared before the commission and provided testimony on how affidavits and other documentation were received by the directorate. Adams' rebuttal places her account in direct conflict with his own, a tension the commission will need to resolve as it continues gathering evidence.

The controversy stems from a secret recording made during a meeting in January 2025, which Adams claims was conducted without his consent, raising serious questions about privacy and whistleblower protections.
