GAUTENG – Stuart Scharnick will remain behind bars after he made a brief appearance before the Randburg Magistrate's Court on 24 August 2026.
Scharnick, who is considered to be a close associate of Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya, appeared in court following his arrest on 20 August 2026. He was arrested at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry after he allegedly intimidated a journalist for taking photos and videos of him.
Shortly after his arrest, the Gauteng Political Killings Task Team seized several of his firearms as well. He now faces three counts related to the contraventions of the Firearm Act.

Bail application postponed to 1 September 2026
During proceedings, the State indicated that the three specific charges Scharnick faces are: allegedly failing to notify the Central Firearm Registrar of a change of address; unlawfully allowing another person access to a firearm by providing them with a safe key; and storing a firearm in a safe that does not meet the requirements prescribed by the Act.
Scharnick's legal team had initially indicated readiness to proceed with a bail application on 24 August, but prosecutors withdrew from that process after becoming aware of previous convictions and prior contraventions. Scharnick will now remain behind bars as his matter was postponed until 1 September 2026.
Madlanga Commission link and KZN court appearance possible
Scharnick's name first surfaced publicly during the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry when Lieutenant General Dumisani Khumalo drew a connection between him and suspended Deputy Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya. He also discussed the numerous criminal cases against Scharnick, and what happened to them.
Scharnick subsequently opened cases of defamation and perjury against General Khumalo. Scharnick may face identical firearm charges in KwaZulu-Natal, suggesting the case could extend beyond Gauteng courts.
Separately, a case of journalist intimidation — the incident that led directly to Scharnick's arrest on 20 August at the Madlanga Commission — remains open. That matter has not yet been addressed in court proceedings.
Scharnick's criminal records deleted from system
Briefly News reported that the KwaZulu-Natal Police provided more details about the criminal cases against Scharnick.
Major General Anthony Gopaul noted how Scharnick's criminal records were deleted from the police system's front end.
The records were still retrievable from the system’s back end, which allowed investigators to uncover the incident.
