For a brief, glorious moment, it looked like South Africa had produced two Springbok squads at once.

Twenty-three men stood together for an official team photograph on 24 August 2026, sporting uncanny likenesses to some of the country's most recognisable rugby stars. None of them had ever pulled on a green and gold jersey in competition. They were ordinary South Africans, brought together by Klipdrift's Same Same But Klippies #BokSearch campaign.

The idea was simple and distinctly South African. Since the real Springboks can't enjoy a brandy and Coke during a match, Klipdrift went looking for a squad that could, ordinary people who happen to share a striking resemblance with their favourite Bok.

The Doubles Who Made the Squad

The search turned up some remarkable finds. Antonio Munnik, a law enforcement officer from Belhar, was nominated for his likeness to Springbok Grant Williams. Zwelethu Maziya, a real estate agent from Durban, bears such a strong resemblance to Aphelele Fassi that his friends kept sending him the #BokSearch scanner link until he finally entered.

Then there is Anthony Smit, a construction worker from Paarl whose resemblance to Eben Etzebeth has already produced unforgettable moments. He recalls a woman in a biltong shop who was so convinced he was the Springbok lock that she fell off her chair when he walked in. When she realised her mistake, she somehow managed to fall off the chair a second time.

Reflecting on the experience of meeting the rest of the squad, Anthony said: "Meeting the other doubles was amazing. It felt like being part of a provincial rugby team, everyone was ready to play."

A Campaign as South African as a Klippies and Coke

For those selected, the campaign became something bigger than a resemblance competition. It brought together 22 strangers who share one of the more unlikely experiences a South African can have.

Donné Wolk, Marketing Head of Spirits, explained the thinking behind it: "Rugby has a way of bringing South Africans together, whether it's around a screen, at the stadium, at a braai or through the friendly debates that start long before kick-off. With #BokSearch, we wanted to celebrate that connection in a way that felt distinctly South African."

The campaign has also expanded beyond the men's squad. The Springbok Women and Springbok Sevens teams are now loaded onto the scanner, giving South Africans the chance to find doubles across the entire Bok family.

The search remains open. South Africans aged 18 and older can enter #BokSearch until the end of September 2026 for the chance to win a framed Springbok jersey or earn a place in the official Same Same But Klippies squad.

The 23 starting spots may be filled, but the bench is wide open.
