A South African marketing expert has pulled back the curtain on something many shoppers never think about when filling their trolleys. Hamzeh Majiet, an FMCG specialist and digital content creator, posted a breakdown on 26 September 2026 revealing which local manufacturers supply the big four retailers and also run their own factory shops where the public can buy directly.

Majiet's Instagram post pointed out that a large portion of what sits on the shelves at Woolworths, Checkers, Pick n Pay and SPAR is made by South African producers that most consumers never connect to those familiar retail brands.

The factory shops behind your favourite brands

Among the suppliers Majiet highlighted was Ambassador Foods, a nuts and snack manufacturer based at 11 Theo Kleynhans Street, White River, Mpumalanga, which supplies Woolworths and operates its own factory shop.

Fair Cape Dairies, a 150-year-old dairy producer behind Woolworths custard and chocolate mousse, has two factory shops: one at 11 Hunt Road, Killarney Gardens, Cape Town, and another at 5 Nywerheid Industrial, Malmesbury.

Ina Paarman, the beloved South African brand behind seasonings, marinades and cook-in sauces, also manufactures Spur sauces. Their factory shop is located at B1-B6, Diep River Industrial Complex, Greenville Road, Diep River, Cape Town.

Thistle Bakery, which specialises in cakes and baked goods, is based at 15 Brussels Road, Aeroport, Spartan, Kempton Park, Gauteng.
