A Joburg woman is showing South Africans that eating well on a budget is possible. Instagram user @tsakane_home posted a selfie-style video from her kitchen on 13 September 2026, standing behind a countertop covered in fresh produce and asking her followers a simple question: would you believe all of this cost around R300?
The haul included oranges, beetroot, kale, jalapeños, tomatoes, carrots, lemons and potatoes, all purchased in bulk from The Joburg Market in City Deep, one of Johannesburg's largest fresh produce markets. She broke down the prices as she filmed, calling out individual items at R8, R10, R15, R28 and R55 each, with the total coming in just over R300. Her cousin helped cover part of the cost.

Her plan for the haul was practical. With summer approaching, she said she intended to juice most of the produce, while the rest would be chopped and frozen for later use. The strategy, she noted, was something she had learned over time.
