David Miller Eyes First ICC Trophy as South Africa Co-Hosts 2027 Cricket World Cup

South Africa batter David Miller has opened up about what he wants most in the twilight of his career — an ICC trophy, and ideally one won at home.

Speaking to JioStar as reported ICC, the left-hander said the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup represents a deeply personal milestone. South Africa will co-host the tournament alongside Zimbabwe and Namibia. For Miller, the timing could not be more meaningful.

"I am really looking forward to it. For me, it's a goal that I want to achieve. I would love to finish off late in my career with a trophy," he said.

"So, for me, it's a goal that I would love to be a part of that World Cup team."

Miller's long wait for major silverware

Miller has been a fixture in South Africa's white-ball setup since making his international debut in 2010, but an ICC title has consistently eluded him. The closest the Proteas came was at the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup, where they fell to India in a heartbreaking final in Barbados.

South Africa did claim glory in the ICC World Test Championship last year, which Miller says has lifted belief in the camp heading into the 50-over cycle.

Next year's tournament will mark the first time South Africa have hosted a senior men's ICC event since Miller pulled on the green and gold for the first time. It also marks the country's first co-hosting of the 50-over World Cup since Australia won their third title on South African soil back in 2003.

Miller still has to earn his spot

Despite featuring at the three most recent editions of the tournament in 2015, 2019 and 2023, Miller was clear that nothing is taken for granted at his age.

"It's something that is never guaranteed, and I'll definitely, from now until then, be focused on aiming to make that team and to contribute the best I can," he said.

"Obviously, it will be very special, being at home in front of our fans, and in a place that I've played for so many years."

Miller has two World Cup centuries to his name. The first came against Zimbabwe in Hamilton in 2015. The second arrived in 2023 when he struck a superb hundred against eventual champions Australia at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Now with more than 300 international appearances behind him, Miller says the part of his game he values most is his ability to close out matches from the middle order.

"Probably the fact that I've made a career by batting in the middle order and finishing games, that would be something I'm most proud of," he said.

"I'm still learning all the time, but at least I've had a long career in that department, and I've really enjoyed going about chasing innings, especially."
