Former England captain Kevin Pietersen has come under fire after calling South Africa the “GREATEST country on this planet”.

Pietersen, who was born in Pietermaritzburg in 1980, shared the message on X on 7 August 2026 while spending time in South Africa.
The response was mixed, although several users focused on his decision to represent England.

Why Pietersen Represented England
Pietersen left South Africa as a young cricketer after becoming unhappy with the country’s quota system.
In his 2007 autobiography Crossing The Boundary, he described being dropped as “heartbreaking” and argued that players should be selected on merit.
He later established himself as one of England’s leading batsmen and captained the national side.
