Chad le Clos has started rebuilding his life after the devastating Sea Point fire destroyed his home earlier this month. The Olympic swimmer lost the apartment he had regarded as his home away from home, along with irreplaceable sporting memories accumulated throughout his career.
The tragedy also claimed the life of a 93-year-old neighbour and left several other residents displaced.
Le Clos has begun looking ahead to life after the blaze, despite the emotional and practical difficulties of suddenly being without a permanent home.

For Le Clos, however, the apartment represented more than its contents. Speaking to IOL, he explained that it had provided somewhere to escape the demands of professional swimming.
“It was my safe space where I could completely switch off. I’ve kind of lost that,” he said.
He acknowledged that finding another property would be difficult, but stressed that some things mattered more than possessions.
“I’d rather have no home and have my parents free of cancer than have a home and have cancer,” Le Clos said.

The swimmer has received offers of temporary accommodation from friends and strangers. He has also backed fundraising efforts supporting people affected by the fire.
Reflecting on the support, Le Clos said:
“You don’t judge a man or woman’s character by how they celebrate victory. You judge it when their backs are against the wall.”
For now, his focus is on moving forward after a tragedy that changed his life in a matter of hours.
