Scott Sakupwanya Pays Emotional Tribute to Late Wicknell Chivayo After Fatal Helicopter Crash

Scottland FC owner and legislator Pedzai "Scott" Sakupwanya has paid an emotional public tribute to Wicknell Chivayo, the businessman who died in a helicopter crash on 30 September 2026.

Chivayo, his wife Lucy Muteke, her aide Senelisiwe Magagula and pilots Calvin Tafirei Soda and Courage Mutavirwa all perished when the aircraft went down at Kudenga Farm in the Marondera area. Police confirmed that investigations into the circumstances of the crash were underway.

Sakupwanya published his tribute on Instagram under the title "A Farewell to My Brother, Sir Wicknell Chivayo," reflecting on the bond the two men had formed over years of shared faith, friendship and business.

Sakupwanya's Words for His Late Friend

In the post, Sakupwanya characterised their relationship as one built on purpose and prayer.

"Ours has been a journey of PRAYER, of PURPOSE, and of PROGRESS," he wrote.

He also spoke to the values Chivayo had instilled in him, writing:

"You taught me that loyalty is wealth. That true friendship is not about what you get, but what you build together."

Closing the tribute, Sakupwanya pledged that Chivayo's memory would endure within the community he serves.

"Mabvuku-Tafara, Scottland FC and I will forever celebrate you," he wrote, signing off as "Your Brother, Scott."

Followers responded with condolences in the comments section. Commenter makuniganya described the tribute as a powerful expression of brotherly love, while owen_ama2k encouraged Sakupwanya to find comfort in the legacy the two men had built together.

Chivayo's Role in Scottland FC's Rise

The depth of their connection extended well beyond personal friendship. Chivayo was a significant financial backer of Scottland FC, contributing US$1 million towards the club's debut Premier Soccer League campaign.

He was also involved in discussions around the appointment of coach Norman Mapeza in November 2025 and pledged a US$250,000 bonus to players and the technical team after the club clinched the Premier Soccer League title that same month.

Sakupwanya had previously told Scottland FC players that Chivayo wanted the club to model itself after TP Mazembe, the prominent Congolese side. Chivayo's football commitments were not limited to Scottland; he also pledged US$1 million towards Highlanders' 2026 season, though questions about financial accountability later surfaced at the Bulawayo club.
