Orlando Pirates legend Albert ‘Bashin’ Mahlangu has encouraged PSL footballers to use muti to protect themselves, arguing that players should not feel embarrassed about seeking protection.
Mahlangu said footballers should be cautious about what happens around their personal belongings. His comments came during a discussion with KickOff published on 18 August 2026.
“If you are a professional footballer, use something to protect yourself,” he told KickOff.
“Please protect your gear – your soccer boots, kitbag with some muti of your own – so that when your teammate tries to put some muti in your bag, it doesn't work.”

He made the comments while discussing players whose fortunes have changed after showing strong form.
Pirates players among those mentioned
Mahlangu referred to several Orlando Pirates players, including Andre Jong, Kabelo Dlamini, Tshegofatso Mabasa, Evidence Makgopa and Yanela Mbuthuma.
He specifically highlighted Mbuthuma, who joined Pirates from Richards Bay after scoring regularly.
“Yanela Mbuthuma was brought in from Richards Bay, scoring goals from left, right, and centre. He got there at Pirates, he scored and scored... all of a sudden, he has stopped scoring,” Mahlangu said.
He then questioned whether there was an explanation for what he had observed.
“Surely, there is something happening with these boys,” he added.
Mahlangu links his concerns to injuries
The former Buccaneers player also raised concerns about the number of injuries affecting PSL players. He said footballers were now sustaining injuries in training and sometimes spending as long as six months on the sidelines.
Mahlangu questioned whether something was wrong, noting that such lengthy injury lay-offs were not common during his playing career.

He said his views were shaped by his own experience during a 12-year spell at Pirates. He ultimately urged current players to protect themselves, saying,
“So, players, please protect yourself. Use something.”
Mahlangu’s comments are his personal views and do not establish that muti causes injuries or changes in players’ performances
