Kaizer Chiefs striker Khanyisa Mayo could return to action later this month after making progress from the injury that kept him out of the start of the season. The 28-year-old underwent hernia surgery after the end of last season.

The procedure also ruled him out of Chiefs’ pre-season camp in Spain in July. Mayo has now resumed training, although he is still working separately as he rebuilds his fitness.

Chiefs striker could return on September 20

Khanyisa Mayo could be nearing his Kaizer Chiefs comeback, with 20 September reportedly pencilled in as his potential return date. KickOff reports that the striker has recovered well and is now focused on regaining his fitness before being considered for selection.

“The boy has healed nicely; what they are working on now is his fitness,” a source told the publication.

“The exact date set by the medical department for his return is the 20th of September.”

The reported date could boost coach Fernando Da Cruz, particularly with Flavio Silva also sidelined.

Mayo return could strengthen Kaizer Chiefs attack

Chiefs have scored 8 goals in their opening 4 Betway Premiership matches, but Mayo’s return would give Da Cruz another option in attack.

The striker joined Amakhosi after leaving Cape Town City and scored 2 goals last season.

His immediate priority, however, remains completing his recovery and regaining match fitness before returning to competitive action.
