Glody Lilepo Opens Up on Reason He Left Kaizer Chiefs After Just 18 Months

Former Kaizer Chiefs forward Glody Lilepo has publicly addressed his exit from the Soweto club for the first time, pointing to an unresolved salary dispute as the key reason for his departure.

The 29-year-old Congolese international spent 18 months at Naturena, where he emerged as one of the team's standout performers last season. He contributed to close to 10 goals across all competitions as Kaizer Chiefs secured third place in the Betway Premiership. Despite that output, his request for improved remuneration was ultimately rejected.

"The only thing I put on the table was that I wanted an increase in my salary," Lilepo told Soccer Laduma. "I believed that I deserved it because I had become one of the important players in the team. I spoke to the manager (Kaizer Motaung Jr), but it was all in vain despite me explaining why I thought I deserved the increase. For me, the important thing was not simply to leave Chiefs for money. I wanted to play."

Lilepo's move to Libya

Following his exit from Kaizer Chiefs last month, Lilepo signed with Libyan club Al Ahly Benghazi. The club has since moved to replace him, securing winger Langelihle Phili from Stellenbosch FC ahead of the new campaign.

Lilepo backs Chiefs under Da Cruz

Despite the acrimony surrounding his departure, Lilepo expressed genuine confidence in the direction Kaizer Chiefs are heading under new coach Fernando Da Cruz.

"I am happy with the team. They have signed a lot of good players. The coach has selected many new players who can bring change to the team," he told Soccer Laduma. "They have already played some games, so now we have to give them time and wish them good luck. We will see how they finish the league. But I strongly believe that the team can do well."

He added that the club's third-place finish last season provides a reasonable foundation. "When we left, the team was in third place, and now they have started again with a new team and new players. So, we have to give them time. I believe they can do well."
