Thabo Senong Urges South African Players to Consider Zimbabwe PSL Opportunities

Thabo Senong has urged South African footballers to look beyond their borders and consider opportunities in Zimbabwe’s Premier Soccer League (PSL), saying the competition’s reputation is changing as clubs improve how they look after players.

The FC Platinum coach made the remarks in an interview with FARPost published on 1 September 2026. Senong, who works alongside former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana midfielder Reneilwe Letsholonyane, believes Zimbabwe’s top flight is becoming increasingly attractive.

“For sure, the league is becoming a very good and interesting product,” Senong told FARPost.

“If you look at how clubs are taking care of players, that tells you a lot because the game belongs to the players.”

He added that improved player welfare could strengthen Zimbabwe’s appeal across the region, making the PSL a more attractive destination for footballers from neighbouring countries and potentially South Africa.

Senong urges SA players to give Zimbabwe a chance

Senong believes South African footballers should broaden their horizons rather than focus solely on opportunities at home. He says Zimbabwe’s PSL should now be viewed more seriously by players weighing their next move.

“I would urge players to open themselves up to opportunities outside the borders. If you get a chance to come to Zimbabwe, take it,” he said.

He also argued that concerns about player welfare in Zimbabwe no longer reflect the changing situation at some clubs.

“The narrative that players are not taken care of here is changing. Clubs are now looking after players properly and the league is becoming a very good product,” Senong said.

Zimbabwe PSL’s growing regional appeal

The influx of foreign players is giving Senong’s argument some substance. In 2026, CAPS United signed Botswana international goalkeeper Victor James, while Malawian players Precious Phiri and Vunga Uchizi also joined the Harare club.

Former South African-based players are also returning, with Washington Arubi and Prince Dube among the latest names to move back to Zimbabwe.

The trend extends beyond neighbouring countries, with clubs increasingly recruiting from Ghana, Namibia and Eswatini. Zimbabwe’s PSL also increased its foreign-player quota from five to eight for the 2026 season, reflecting the growing demand for overseas talent.
