Carlos Queiroz’s second spell as Ghana coach has ended after the Black Stars suffered defeats in their opening two AFCON 2027 qualifiers. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed on 1 October 2026 that it had mutually agreed with the Portuguese coach to terminate his contract.

The decision came after Ghana lost 2-0 to Côte d’Ivoire on 24 September before surrendering a 2-0 lead in a 4-2 defeat to The Gambia on 29 September.

However, the two AFCON defeats left Ghana bottom of Group C with no points. Ghana surrendered a two-goal advantage against The Gambia before losing 4-2 in Accra.

In a statement published by the GFA, Queiroz said the decision was reached after discussions between both sides. He said:

“This was not an easy decision, but both parties agreed that, under the present circumstances, ending our professional relationship was the most appropriate course of action.”

Queiroz added:

“The necessary conditions were not fully established, and our recent performance added to the decision to bring this journey to an end.”

Former Bafana Bafana coach’s record with Ghana

Queiroz is familiar to South African football supporters, having previously coached Bafana Bafana between 2000 and 2002. He also has extensive international coaching experience.

His latest Ghana tenure produced one win, two draws and four defeats across seven matches. His departure now leaves Ghana searching for a new coach before their next AFCON qualifying assignment against Somalia in November.
