Maboi shared her views during an appearance on the *Engineer Your Life* podcast hosted by Lungelo KM on 6 October 2026, where she argued that couples can remain committed without getting married or even living under the same roof.

Her comments have since divided opinion on X, with some social media users agreeing with her views while others questioned whether her own experience of marriage influenced her stance.

Mpho Maboi questions the idea of marriage

During the podcast, Maboi challenged the assumption that couples who have been together for several years must eventually get married.

"Just because we've been together for six, seven, eight years, the next logical step is not always marriage," she said.

The sports broadcaster then described a relationship where two people could remain together while maintaining separate homes.

"Baby, I'm fine in my home, mina ngiright, ngihlala kwami, wena uhlala kwakho, sijole forever," Maboi said.

She also questioned why couples should feel compelled to marry simply because their relationship has reached a certain point.

According to Maboi, family expectations can play a major role in creating that pressure, particularly when relatives start asking long-term couples when they are getting married. She pointed to the familiar expectation that couples should eventually "shadani for abantwana" once children enter the picture.

Maboi also questioned the validation that marriage is expected to provide.

"Why are we so intent on having people be married? What difference does it bring to the relationship, or what sort of validation does it bring?" she asked.

Her comments echo views she has expressed publicly before.

In a 2023 interview, Maboi said she believed marriage was not necessarily the endpoint for everyone and argued that the institution had contributed to difficulties in her own relationship. She said at the time that she believed she and her former husband, retired footballer Reneilwe Letsholonyane, might still have been together had they not married.

Maboi and Letsholonyane's relationship and subsequent divorce have previously been the subject of extensive public discussion.

Briefly News reported in June 2026 that Maboi had spoken about the reasons she ended her marriage, saying that repeated attempts to address problems, including couples therapy, had not resulted in lasting change.

She also previously discussed her dating life after the divorce, revealing that she had turned down two Range Rovers from suitors because she did not want relationships based on money.
