Former Bafana Bafana defender Matthew Booth has launched his book, *A Game of Two Halves*, reflecting on the challenges professional footballers face when their playing careers come to an end.
Booth explained the inspiration behind the title during the book launch, using the familiar football expression to describe the contrasting experiences of a player's life during and after professional football.
The former defender said the first half represents the glory days, when players enjoy regular salaries, popularity, travelling opportunities and attention from journalists.
However, the second half can be considerably more difficult, particularly when the contracts stop coming, and former players have to adjust to life outside the game.
"What do you do when that contract ends?" Booth asked while explaining the thinking behind the book.
The project also celebrates South African football heritage, with some of the country's top legends contributing to the publication.

Matthew Booth explains the meaning
Booth said the book's title was inspired by the different realities that professional footballers experience throughout their careers. He described the first half as a period when players enjoy the rewards of their profession, including financial security, recognition and the excitement of competing at the highest level.
The second half, however, can be a difficult adjustment for those who struggle to find direction after retirement.
Booth explained that he did not necessarily want to describe this stage as depressing, but acknowledged that many former footballers experience difficult circumstances once their playing days are over.
He also drew inspiration from the familiar football cliché used by coaches and players to describe matches in which one half goes well before the other takes an unexpected turn.
For the former Bafana defender, the expression carries a deeper meaning when applied to a footballer's life beyond the pitch.

Matthew Booth brings South African football legends
The book also provides an opportunity to celebrate the experiences and contributions of established figures in South African football.
Booth's project comes against the backdrop of wider discussions about preparing professional athletes for life after retirement.
In a 2018 interview with BizNews, the former defender discussed the subject and explained that he had interviewed 17 football personalities from South Africa and abroad for a book project exploring the experiences of retired players.
He said the interviews combined humorous football stories with lessons and difficult experiences the personalities had encountered.
Booth has also continued to speak about the importance of education and financial preparation after professional sport.
In a 2024 interview with EWN, he reflected on returning to university after retiring from football in 2014. He also discussed the importance of developing skills beyond the playing field.
Through *A Game of Two Halves*, Booth brings attention to a subject that extends beyond football results and trophies: preparing players for the next chapter of their lives.
