Springboks loose forward Elrigh Louw has reflected on the emotional and mental toll of the nine-month rehabilitation that kept him away from rugby, describing the period as one of the toughest experiences of his career. The powerful forward has now earned his way back into the starting XV ahead of South Africa's Rugby Championship encounter against Argentina on Saturday, 8 August.
Elrigh Louw opens up about difficult rehabilitation journey
According to SuperSport, Louw said the serious knee injury left him devastated and forced him to overcome challenges beyond the physical recovery.
"It was quite a big injury and devastating for me at the time," Louw said.

"There was a lot of support behind me — the whole family that helped me, the medical staff, and the rehab team to get back on the field in the time that I did."
He added that returning to the Springboks remained his biggest motivation.
"Just the motivation to be back in the Springbok squad was more than enough motivation for me to keep on working hard and to play rugby again to the best of my ability. Mentally, forgetting about the injury was also a big part of it."
Family and Springboks dream kept Louw motivated
Louw credited his support system for helping him through the rehabilitation process and said their encouragement played a key role in his recovery.
The 25-year-old also said the experience has strengthened his appreciation of representing South Africa again after months on the sidelines.

Springboks prepare for Argentina after lessons from 2024
Turning his attention to Saturday's Rugby Championship encounter in Buenos Aires, Louw said South Africa expected another physical battle against Argentina. He explained that the Springboks had taken valuable lessons from their one-point defeat on their previous visit in 2024 and believed the squad had prepared thoroughly for the challenge.
Having overcome one of the biggest setbacks of his career, Louw now has the opportunity to write a new chapter in Springbok colours.
Tomás Albornoz ban boosts Springboks before Argentina Test
Briefly News also reported that Argentina will be without first-choice fly-half Tomás Albornoz for Saturday's Rugby Championship clash against the Springboks after World Rugby handed him a four-match suspension.
The ban followed disciplinary proceedings over his conduct towards referee Angus Gardner after Argentina's defeat to England on 18 July.
