Former Springbok captain Bob Skinstad believes South Africa's defeat to the All Blacks should not be treated as a crisis, arguing instead that the setback has the potential to sharpen the squad ahead of the remaining Tests in the Rugby's Greatest Rivalry series.
The Springboks suffered a 33-16 loss at Ellis Park on 22 August 2026, ending a 12-match winning streak and surrendering their world No 1 ranking. To retain any hope of claiming the series, Rassie Erasmus' side must now win all three of their remaining fixtures.
Skinstad points to depth and long-term planning
Former Springbok No 8 Bob Skinstad believes South Africa have enough experience and depth to turn their latest setback into a positive as they look ahead.
Speaking to Planet Rugby, the 42-cap former international pointed to the strength of the current squad, arguing that the Springboks have several combinations capable of competing at the highest level over the next 18 months. Skinstad also highlighted the experience within the group, suggesting that the team’s senior players have been through enough difficult moments to understand how to respond when results do not go their way.
He used South Africa’s own history as an example, recalling how the Springboks once conceded 57 points in New Zealand before going on to lift the Rugby World Cup the following year.

For Skinstad, the defeat should therefore be viewed as a setback rather than a threat to the team’s progress. He believes it can expose areas that need improvement and ultimately bring the squad closer together as they work to address them.
Skinstad critical of Springbok game plan
Despite his broader optimism, Skinstad did not shy away from criticising specific decisions made during the Ellis Park defeat, targeting both the tactical approach and on-field discipline.
"South Africa played the wrong game plan last week, New Zealand played the right one," he told Planet Rugby.
"I do think there were some questionable decisions, and not only by the Springboks in what they did when they had the ball."
He specifically pointed to a sequence involving four consecutive scrums, a conceded penalty, and two yellow cards received by South Africa while failing to earn one against the opposition, describing it as "not smart rugby."
The Springboks' next opportunity to respond comes in the second Test of the series, with the result at Ellis Park having reset the contest entirely in New Zealand's favour.
