Teddy Wilson: Wallabies Call Up Son of 1999 Rugby World Cup Winner

  • Scrumhalf Teddy Wilson, 23, has been named in the Wallabies squad alongside fellow debutant Tom Lambert
  • Wilson's father David played 79 Tests for Australia and was part of the 1999 World Cup-winning side
  • Australia face England, Scotland, Wales and a fourth opponent during next month's Nations Championship tour

The Wallabies have welcomed a new generation of rugby royalty, with scrumhalf Teddy Wilson earning his first squad call-up on Friday for Australia's upcoming Nations Championship Tests in Europe.

Wilson, 23, is the son of former Wallabies flanker David Wilson, who earned 79 caps for Australia, captained the side nine times, and lifted the World Cup trophy in 1999. Teddy, a former Junior Wallabies captain, will serve as a third scrumhalf option behind Ryan Lonergan and Tate McDermott.

Tom Lambert named for the first time

Loosehead prop Tom Lambert was also named for the first time, making him the other new face in the touring group.

The squad is further strengthened by the availability of Taniela Tupou and Tom Hooper, who featured off the bench during Australia's victory over world champions South Africa in Perth last month. Both players were unavailable for the subsequent Bledisloe Cup Tests against New Zealand, as those fixtures fell outside World Rugby's global player release window.

Returning from injury are flyhalf Carter Gordon, flyhalf Ben Donaldson and centre Len Ikitau, while centre Hunter Paisami is back after serving a suspension for a high tackle.

Wallabies coach speaks on the World Cup

Head coach Les Kiss described the upcoming tour as a significant test for the group, with next year's home World Cup looming large.

Kiss added that the tour presents a chance to develop new combinations ahead of the World Cup. "This tour gives us another valuable opportunity to test new combinations, strengthen our existing connections and push our game forward in all areas," he said.

Australia's November schedule includes Tests against England, Scotland and Wales, plus a fourth opponent yet to be confirmed for the Nations Championship finals weekend.
