Few people expected to see a former Springbok scrumhalf competing on a tropical reality show, but that is exactly what South Africans got when Francois Hougaard popped up on Tropika Island of Treasure.
A clip shared on X by Tropika on 30 September sent viewers into a spin, with one user typing in disbelief:
"IS THAT FORMER SPRINGBOK FRANSCOIS HOUGAARD ON A REALITY TV SHOW?!"
The post attracted thousands of views, and Tropika confirmed in its reply that it was indeed him.
Hougaard Joins a Star-Studded Cast
Season 12 of the long-running competition is being filmed on Réunion Island and features eight celebrities going up against eight ordinary South Africans. Alongside Hougaard, the celebrity line-up includes Olympic champion Caster Semenya, rapper Nadia Nakai, former Miss South Africa Lalela Mswane, Amanda du-Pont, Leandie du Randt, Sandile Mahlangu and Wiseman Mncube.

The prize at stake is R1 million, with challenges testing physical ability, problem-solving, strategy and teamwork.
Before the season premiered, Hougaard spoke to Jacaranda FM about what drew him to the experience, describing it as a different kind of challenge from anything rugby had thrown at him. He also had a light-hearted warning about Caster Semenya, admitting she would be tough to keep up with in any running event.
The season premiered on SABC1 on 23 September 2026, with new episodes airing on Wednesdays at 21:00.

Mzansi Reacts to Hougaard's Reality TV Debut
Social media had plenty to say once the news spread. One person quipped that Hougaard had found "another source of income", while another admitted they had initially questioned whether it was really him on screen. A few commenters simply responded with laughing emojis, and at least one described the sighting as a "shock."
Some of the conversation also turned to Hougaard's past relationship with the late Reeva Steenkamp, who herself appeared on Tropika Island of Treasure Season 5, filmed in Jamaica in 2012 and broadcast in 2013.
Steenkamp was part of a celebrity cast that included AKA, Da L.E.S., Pearl Thusi and Jay Anstey. Hougaard and Steenkamp had dated previously, and Hougaard later spoke publicly about their relationship and the profound effect of her death in 2013.
Hougaard retired from international rugby having earned 46 Springbok caps, with overseas stints that included time at Worcester Warriors. Now 34, he has swapped the rugby field for the challenges of a reality island competition, a move that, for many South Africans, came completely out of nowhere.
