US to rename military bases that honor Confederate figures by 2024

The United States will rename nine army bases that honor figures from the pro-slavery Confederacy by the beginning of 2024, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said on Thursday. All of the bases being renamed are located in Southern states that seceded from the United States and formed the Confederacy, which lost the 1861-1865 Civil War.

From the ruins of a five-story building on the main street of Zaporizhzhia, a manicured hand with bright red fingernails protrudes from the rubble. The United States announced tighter screening Thursday for people who traveled to Uganda due to an outbreak of Ebola in the African country. As of Thursday, "no suspected, probable, or confirmed EVD cases related to this outbreak have been reported in the United States or other countries outside of Uganda," the CDC said.
