A supermarket employee in Mexico became an unlikely hero after dropping everything to sprint after a toddler who darted into fast-moving traffic, in a moment caught on CCTV footage shared by CNN on TikTok on 8 September 2026.
The incident happened on 6 September in Mexico, outside a store identified as El Rey del Ahorro. The child was walking with her parents near a parking area when she suddenly bolted toward the road without warning. Cars were moving at high speed, and within seconds the situation turned critical.
The mother reacted first, running after her daughter, but she slipped and fell before reaching the road. The father, delayed behind her, also hesitated at the kerb. A store employee who had been handling a trolley in the parking area saw what was happening, dropped it, and ran.
Stranger's quick thinking pulled child to safety
One vehicle passed the toddler at speed. A second driver slammed on the brakes. At that moment, the employee reached the child, grabbed her, and pulled her back from the lane as the car skidded to a stop. He fell backwards in the process, shielding the girl as he brought her to the ground. The parents quickly rushed in, retrieved their daughter, and took her back inside the store.

The man was later identified in the comments as Luis Enrique Cruz, the manager of El Rey del Ahorro. According to one commenter, the family thanked him afterwards, and the business publicised the footage, which is how it reached news outlets.
Road safety experts say incidents like this are far more common than parents expect. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, children lack the developmental ability to judge vehicle speed and distance, often until around age 10. Their small size also makes them harder for drivers to spot, particularly near parked cars or in busy parking areas.
Viewers online shocked by parents' reaction
The video on the TikTok page drew thousands of comments, with many people more focused on the parents than on the danger itself:
@Luigi said:
"The stranger risked his life the parents did not."
@Ricky wrote:
"Funny how the father hesitates to go to the road. He stopped. It's crazy."
@Share_Partager_Share noted:
"Luis Enrique Cruz, hero and manager of El Rey del Ahorro supermarket. They all thanked him later and so did the business, hence why this video was even publicised to the news station!"
@fish3_23_2 observed:
"The random person put in more effort than the parents."
