Prophet Uebert Angel took to the pulpit at the Harare Hippodrome on Sunday, 4 October 2026, delivering a sermon that quickly lit up Zimbabwean social media. Addressing what he called theological controversy head-on, the preacher mounted a defence of names and titles traditionally associated with God being applied to ordinary people, in what many viewers understood as a response to criticism directed at businessman Wicknell Chivayo over his use of the title "Atiq," the Hebrew term for "Ancient of Days."
Uebert Angel defends Wicknell Chivayo's blasphemous title
Speaking to a packed indoor congregation, the controversial Zimbabwean preacher held a handheld microphone and walked his audience through a comparison of divine names and titles. He pointed out that names such as Emmanuel, Joshua, and Jesus, all of which carry deep theological meaning in Christianity, are freely given to people without public outcry. He extended this to names like Shumba, meaning "lion," a symbol also associated with God.

"When language changes, you cry. Right now you were claiming for a coach called Jesus. Jesus in football, no one is shouting about it," Angel said, drawing a sharp contrast between what he described as selective outrage.

He did, however, draw a line at intention:
"When you call it Atiq, and you intend to say you are equal to God, then you are in danger."

"When you call yourself Ancient of Days and start acting like one, you will be humbled."
@duane_andrea pushed back on Angel's core logic:
"Ancient of Days is not a name like Emmanuel or Joshua or Jesus; it's a title. He missed that small part: a name calls something, a title describes something, and that small point changes everything… but you know what? I know nothing."
@dadypee88 went after the context surrounding Chivayo specifically:
"It would have been OK if Wicknell got the name when he was born, but he got the name after he acquired a certain amount of riches, and he felt like he had it all."

@Urthur_Chisan was more blunt:
"All these pastors used this Sunday to settle scores on behalf of Wicknell. Blasphemy of blasphemy!"
@NyaradzaiE added:
"False equivalence. His was not a given name at birth. He himself explains he got the name because of what he was doing, giving things to people like God would when they pray to Him."
@LMutepfa83 offered a theological breakdown:
"Emmanuel is 'God with us', a testimony a man can carry. Daniel and Samuel all had 'El' in their names. Mukuru Vemazuva/Ancient of Days is 'GOD HIMSELF who has no beginning.' Daniel 7:9. That title is for GOD alone. One is testimony; the other is identity. Don't confuse them."
